National Informatics Centre is a premier ICT organization of the Government of India, established in 1976 , for providing e-government/ e-governance solutions adopting best practices, integrated services and global solutions in Government sector. NIC is under Ministry of Information and communication Technology NIC is set up in each district headquarter with the Office located in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner to extend ICT at the district level. Each District NIC Office is under the State NIC Office. Since inception, NIC South West Khasi Hills has been actively involved in different ICT endeavour. NIC is extending support in implementation of MIS for different Central Government Schemes at the district level and the Block Level. Since South West Khasi Hills is a newly created district so the setting up of NIC Center is still an ongoing process. There are tremendous opportunity and scope for NIC to get involved in many activity in near future.
NICNet (NICNetwork) is the network backbone of NIC which connects the NIC headquarters, all the State Units and the
District Units. The district unit will be shortly connected with a 34 MBPS Leased Line. In DC’s Office a structured
LAN will be established in all important rooms. Connectivity will be available 24x7 for all the users in DC’s Office
Video Conferencing Studio: NIC at the District Office are equipped with Video Conferencing set up via a 34 MBPS Leased Line. The conferencing studio is already set up and after the NICNET connectivity the District Administration will be able to use the facility in a state of the art manner.
The process of creation of new NIC District Unit started as soon as South West Khasi Hills District was newly created on 3rd August, 2012 carving it out of the old West Khasi Hills District. The previous conference hall with a dimension of 800 square feet approx, in DC's office Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District was proposed by the Deputy Commissioner of the District to be converted to the office of DIO (District Informatics Officer) NIC (National Informatics Center). The work was assigned to the PWD Building, West Khasi Hills District and fund was sanctioned by GAD Meghalaya in collaboration with the central government. The building is since then under construction and by April 2015 it is 95% completed.
